Datil Peppers were introduced to the New Smyrna / St. Augustine areas 300 years ago by Minorcan settlers who were part of the Andrew Turnbull Colony. These peppers are unique to these areas of Florida only. They are rare peppers that are extremely hot and offer their own unique flavor. Many speculate that the Minorcans came across these peppers in Guba or somewhere in the Caribbean upon their journey to New Smyrna. After the new colony failed, the group moved to St.Augustine where there are still many Minorcan descendants who use the Datil Pepper in many of their recipes today.
